The Comarnic Cave is known for its complexity as a "karst system." Its length of 6,201 meters and the morphology of its spacious galleries have helped draw attention to Comarnic Cave and its special importance.

The abundance and size of formations (made by erosion and corrosion) visibly demonstrate the various stages of gallery evolution and the complex hydrogeological functioning of the system.

In addition, the speogenetic deposits, or formations, can also offer important information about the evolution of the cave as well as its surrounding area. All the more, there is a strong call for special attention of these deposits simply because of their size, diversity, uniqueness and abundance.

From the aforementioned reasons and the cave's unique geological structure (stratified limestone with bedlike siliceous intercalations) the underground scenery is one like no other. Due to its unusual beauty, a tourist trail has been developed in Comarnic Cave that has a total length of 1,750 meters.

Ponicova Creek, which runs through the cave, offers the resources needed for the abundant fauna found in the temporary active (sub-fossil) level (a total of 127 known species). The spaciousness and favorable climate are prime conditions for the five different species of bats that can be found hibernating during the winters. In past years, there have been populations of over 500 bats documented (either with their colonies or isolated).
